New Baby Checklist

Amidst all the excitement of preparing for the arrival of a new baby, it can also get a little overwhelming, especially when it's your first. There are many things you'll buy which you probably don't really need (but you'll only work that out after you have the second, or even third child)!

I have put together the following list of some of the things new parents may need. Please feel free to comment below if you think anything should be added to the list! What was your best buy for your new baby?

Nursery Furniture

  • Bassinet - not entirely necessary, but I found it useful in the first few months to move the bassinet close to where I am or next to my bed at night, so I didn't have to go very far for those night time feeds.
  • Cot
  • Set of drawers which can double as a change table
  • Bedding - lightweight baby blankets are great for layering
  • Baby monitor
  • Comfy chair for you to sit in during those night time feeds

Clothes/Sleeping

  • Singlets
  • Onesies
  • Nappies
  • Sleeping bags (they come in a range of thicknesses to suit the temperature)
  • Sunhat
  • Beanie (for the winter months
  • Mittens (some babies will scratch their face)
  • Socks (quite a few because they always fall off!)

Transportation

  • Baby carrier/sling
  • Pram
  • Car restraint that meets national standards

Feeding

  • Breast pump
  • Steriliser
  • Bottles and teats
  • Formula if you're bottle feeding

Bathtime

  • Face washers
  • Towels (hooded ones are great!)
  • Soap free baby wash
  • Baby moisturiser
  • Baby bathtub (not always necessary, especially if you have a large kitchen or laundry sink)

Toiletries

  • Wipes
  • Nappy rash cream
  • Bepanthan (nipple cream - for Mum)
  • Baby nail clippers
  • Nappy sacks (for those smelly nappies when you're out)
  • First aid kit
  • Thermometer
